About[]

The "Paper Umbrella" ( (から) (かさ) Karakasa?) is a tsukumogami, a transformation of Chinese-style oiled-paper umbrellas. These yōkai are considered typically harmless. However, in Mononoke the Movie: Phantom in the Rain, the Karakasa becomes a threat to the Ooku, after the death of Kitagawa, a scribe who committed suicide in the well 3 months prior to the movie's events.

Story[]

In Mononoke - Phantom in the Rain, it is unclear as to whether the Karakasa was a manifestation of the emotions of Kitagawa, the scribe who died to suicide amidst great regret towards her decisions and choices that had led to the death of a friend she had banished from the Ooku, or the emotions of the numerous housemaids who, in their service to the Ooku, 'dried out' as they lost the things they cherished most.
