Mononoke (モノノ怪) is a 2007 Japanese avant-garde anime television series produced by Toei Animation, and is a spinoff series of the Bakeneko arc of an earlier anthology series Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales. It follows the enigmatic Medicine Seller as he investigates and exorcises lingering spirits, the titular Mononoke.
The episodes of Mononoke take place between the Edo period and the Meiji era of Japan. There seems to exist a four-class system, with the samurai constituting the highest class and merchants like the medicine seller himself being in the lowest class.

The episodes of Mononoke are divided into arcs focusing on a particular Mononoke. Episodes 1-2 feature the Zashiki Warashi, episodes 3-5 feature the Umibōzu, episodes 6-7 feature the Noppera-bō, episodes 8-9 feature the Nue and finally, episodes 10-12 feature the Bakeneko, being a spinoff of Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales' Bakeneko arc.
